2021 – East White Oak Ancestral Garden

Greensboro, NC – 2021 – The East White Oak Ancestral Sculpture Garden was established to honor the legacy of Greensboro’s civil rights movement and pay tribute to the ancestral figures who shaped the East White Oak community. Completed in 2021, the garden commemorates two influential individuals: Truman Gant and David Richmond—one of the A&T Four who helped spark the Woolworth sit-ins of the 1960s. This collaborative effort, led by landscape architect Steve Cancian and NC A&T landscaping students, features meaningful sculptural works including a powerful tribute to Richmond by artist Damien Mathis and a metal memorial bench dedicated to Gant by artist Vandorn Hinnant. Supported by Creative Greensboro, the garden serves as a peaceful space of remembrance, reflection, and pride—preserving untold stories and celebrating the enduring spirit of East White Oak.
